10 Commandments: Honour your parents

Read: Exodus 20:12; Proverbs 1:8-9; 20:20; 23:22-25; Ephesians 6:1
In This Passage: God says to honour our parents, and he promises a long life for those who do. We can honour our parents by listening to them, not saying mean things to them, bringing them joy, and obeying them.
Bible Point: We show love to our parents.
Summary Verse: “Jesus replied, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind’ ” (Matthew 22:37).

God gave us parents to take care of us! We don’t always like their rules, but we show love to our parents anyway.  Did you know the Bible even calls God our Father? God reveals so much about his fatherly love for us through the Bible, his special book.  We obey our parents. Sometimes we don’t want to, but we trust that they’re trying to do what’s best for us and help us grow into people who love and follow God. When we think about it from that point of view, it makes it a little easier to follow God’s Commandment.

Activity:

Gather some craft supplies, card or paper and colouring pens or pencils.  Write or draw your mum or dad (or both) a special card telling them how much you love them.

Here are some ideas.

Pray:

Today we learned that we show love to our parents. We listen. Lead kids to put a hand up to an ear. We’re kind with our words. Lead kids to smile and point to the sides of their mouths. We bring joy to our parents. Lead kids to hold up their hands, palms forward, and shimmy them (jazz hands). And we do what our parents say using obedient feet. Lead kids in patting their legs to sound like walking feet.

Let’s ask God to help us show love to our parents in these ways. Lead kids in a prayer asking
God for help with showing love in the four ways you just mentioned, having kids use the motions they
practiced as you pray about each one. Then close in prayer.

Bible Study:

Need a piece of paper each and some colouring pens or pencils.

Thank Parents for Help

Read aloud Ephesians 6:1-3.

There are lots of ways our parents take care of us.  Talk about a time you were hurt and one of your parents helped you.

Our parents take care of us when we’re hurt.  Draw a bandaid on your paper.

Thank Parents for Providing

Our parents help us have the things we need like food, clothes, and a safe place to sleep. Talk about your favorite meal your parents make for you.

Draw pictures of the things our parents give us. Maybe it’s food, clothes, a house, or anything else you need.

Thank Parents for Loving Us

God gave our parents a special job: taking care of us! Our parents help us when we’re hurt
or sad. They make sure we have the things we need. Best of all, our parents love us.  Draw a picture of a heart.

Put your pictures on the fridge so your parents can see them.
