Come and Talk with Me
The month of Elul in the Jewish calendar is from September 1 to September 29. During this month it is traditional for religious Jews to prepare their hearts for the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Succot. The shofar is sounded each day in the morning prayer service leading up to Rosh Hashana, or Feast of Trumpets, also known as Jewish New Year, which this year starts on the evening of September 29.
The period of ten days between the Feast of Trumpets and Yom Kippur is also known as ‘Teshuvah’, which means ‘returning’ or ‘repentance’, sometimes called ‘the Days of Awe’. These are the days of soul-searching leading up to Yom Kippur, and these will be days of asking, seeking and knocking.
This is a reminder of our verse for today, which says, “And so I tell you, keep on asking and you will receive what you ask for, keep on seeking and you will find, keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, everyone who seeks finds and everyone who knocks the door will be opened”.
It is only as we come before Him in quietness and stillness that we are able to hear the Father’s still small voice. We live in a seemingly very busy world, always rushing about, doing things, keeping appointments, and sometimes we have to make a real effort to be still before Him.
He wants us more and more to spend time with Him, and it’s only from this that we will grow and move forward in our walk with Him. So, if your life seems to be a whirlwind of busyness, right now, why not decide to take some time out to be still and hear the Father’s voice beckoning, calling you to seek Him.
Psalm 27: 8 says, ‘My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me”. And my heart responds, “Lord I am coming”’.
