Matthew 10:41 (NIV) says: “Whoever welcomes a prophet as a  prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward”.

Verse 42 says: “And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward”.

Jesus was well aware, when he spoke these words, that his disciples would need the support of others, if they were to “go into all the earth and make disciples of all nations”.

They would meet with indifference and hostility on every hand. With this in mind, Jesus made the promise that those who provided this support, would not go unrewarded. Those who are called to go forth as missionaries, often do so at great personal sacrifice, in order to fulfil their calling.

Not all of us are called to be missionaries, but we can all be involved in the work of the Great Commission, in one way or another. Every army depends heavily on those behind the lines, to support those at the front.

We can always support the missionaries in prayer, and in this season of “Prayer and Self Denial” we all have the chance to contribute to their material needs as well.

Jesus himself has promised that we will be rewarded, for whatever support we provide for the sake of His Kingdom, and we can be certain: “the Lord will be no man’s debtor”.
