In 1949 George Orwell wrote a book called 1984. He wrote about a society where surveillance cameras are watching over everyone’s movements. His well-known phrase in the book is “Big brother is watching you.”

George Orwell was pretty close to the truth because today surveillance cameras are being installed everywhere..  Today, there are an estimated 4.2 million closed-circuit video cameras in the UK alone! London is saturated with them.

The same is happening in NZ. These cameras watch inside and outside buildings, shops, sidewalks, streets, motorways, parks, for security reasons. They monitor people’s movements at nearly every level of activity. The reason is because people cannot be trusted.

The Bible told us this 3000 years ago. Jeremiah 17:9 “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately corrupt.”

It is so sad that we have to have things like surveillance cameras and security. If we are genuine followers of Jesus we should never need to be monitored.

We should hate everything that is deceitful and dishonest and seek to live lives that are honest and trustworthy.
