I read something recently which said that “Joy is the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life, the quiet confidence that ultimately everything is going to be alright, and the determined choice to praise God in every situation.” I love that definition.

It doesn’t indicate that things are going to be smooth, happy and always go our way. It gives us confidence in God who has complete control of everything that is going on in our lives and that he has our back. Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NIV) says “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” The Message Bible puts verse 8 like this. “Never a worry through the hottest of summers, never dropping a leaf. Serene and calm through droughts, bearing fresh fruit every season.”

What a challenge it can be to have confidence in God, to have no worries in times of “drought”, extreme heat and pressure or trials. When we can submit our lives daily to God and trust him fully we can bear fruit even in the hard times. Serene and calm. God has got you and will never let you down. Trust in Him and praise Him in every situation. That is what joy is.
