Leader or Follower?
Most people want to be a leader – you know, the big boss with the flash car and all of the prestige. Or, maybe you want a lot of people following you and hanging on your every word. However, that’s not really Leadership. If all it took was a lot of people following you, the guy being chased by an angry mob shaking pitchforks would technically be their ‘leader’ – but neither he nor the mob would probably think of it that way.
No, Leadership is hard, challenging, frustrating, sometimes rewarding, but mostly hard work. True leadership isn’t even about ‘you’ at all! Real leadership is about serving people. True leaders set an example for their people to follow, and then help develop them, guide them and watch them grow.
Two thousand years ago, an unassuming man turned the world on its head, and redefined what Leadership really means. He demonstrated it every day with his disciples, but they really didn’t get it, even as He prepared to die. They asked “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.” Mark 10:37
They were missing the point! Jesus told them “… whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.” Mark 10:43-44
If you want to be a Leader, prepare to be a follower, and lift up the people around you. That’s what Jesus demonstrated, every day.
