Prayer and Self-Denial Appeal

Today marks the start of the annual Prayer and Self-denial Appeal, run by tranzsend every year to promote the practice of prayer and practical support for the work of mission.

Have you ever considered some of the things missionaries deny themselves by going out into the mission field? The things they sacrifice in the places they go and the work they do for the Lord?

Things like the comforts of home and living in a first world country, a familiar language and culture and good medical care; family and friends and even children who need perhaps to go to boarding school.

It must be easy sometimes to succumb to loneliness in a foreign land when we are surrounded by people of another culture and language. We all have a need for love and acceptance from others.

Loneliness is one of the weapons used by the devil to discourage and dishearten us and to cause us to feel dispirited, even self-pity. But God provides a means of escape! We need to learn to rely on His promise in Hebrews 13:5, “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.”

Like the missionary, we need to remember this promise and experience the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ in our everyday living.

As you consider what contribution you can make to this appeal, what you can deny yourself in supporting the work of God. Pray that the missionaries will experience the presence of God and fellowship with Him in new and satisfying ways.

Bless you as you serve Him in this way.
