Love is not a “second-hand emotion” – it’s an eternal investment. In 1 Thessalonians 2:17–20 we see Paul’s deep, Spirit-filled affection for the Thessalonian church: he longs to be with them, he battles real spiritual opposition to their fellowship, and he sees them as his “hope, joy and crown” when Christ returns. This sermon explores what that kind of cross-shaped love looks like for us today: longing for fellowship, expecting Satan’s attempts to divide, and intentionally investing in people’s walk with Jesus – because the only riches that cross heaven’s threshold are the lives we’ve loved toward Christ.

The Thessalonian church was a community so in love with Jesus that their faith “rang out everywhere.” In 1 Thessalonians 1:7–10 we see a powerful picture of what it looks like when a church truly loves Christ: they become an example to other believers, the word of God echoes through their everyday conversations, idols are ruthlessly abandoned, and their lives are shaped by a real anticipation of Jesus’ return.
