Learning from Christian Farming Trusts in South Waikato

Last year I had the privilege of attending the book launch of the book entitled “In Trust: A New Zealand Story” by Ian Hunter. This book outlines the history of trusts, formed way back in the 1950s by Christian farmers. Since then their tremendous support financially has helped many Christian causes and especially in the Waikato.

I summarised some of their vision and insights referred to in the book, (all Scripturally based) primarily to see how Bible in Schools could apply them. Now I’m thinking, maybe the church could reflect on them too. Here are just a random few –

The first thing is to look to the Lord in everything. There is a Sovereign overruling hand.

Seek counsel. In a multitude of counsellors there is wisdom.

Besides praying, trustees shared a verse from the Bible when they met together.

Like-minded individuals coming together for a common resolve. The simple free-flowing interchange of ideas and support is integral to what makes us function as a farming / church community. Through it we all move forward together.
It’s about developing the people around us and being involved in the community. It involves looking at the bigger picture. Pool our resources. We can always do more collectively than individually.

There are advantages in long term relationships and long term commitment. Your staff is one of your biggest assets. Most were men who had known sacrifice and hardship. Their motives were spiritual. They went to where they could make a difference.
Now the baton has been passed on and 3rd generation farmers lead the work. Our early trustees would be disappointed if we did not adapt, develop, and respond strategically to our world.

It’s really exciting to see people’s lives transformed. Grounded in faith we look forward confidently to the future notwithstanding the very real challenges we face today.
