Becoming Partakers of God’s Nature Through His Promises

 

2 Peter 1:3-4: “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence, by which He has granted to us His precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.”

In reading this passage recently I have been reminded of all the wonderful promises of God we have to help and encourage us. However in this passage a new thought struck me – that through these promises we actually become partakers of the divine nature – Wow!

This has reminded me of the hymn we used to sing, “Standing on the promises of God”. There are five verses and a refrain. They are all excellent but I quote the second one here.

“Standing on the promises that cannot fail,                                                                                                                                                                 When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,                                                                                                                                                         By the living Word of God I shall prevail,                                                                                                                                                                           Standing on the promises of God.”
