Fad or For Life?
Everyone knows that we should think and plan before starting something new. However, new things can be exciting, so most of us leap right in without a second thought. Then, you find yourself part way through and find it boring or too difficult, and give it up to move on to the next shiny new thing.
One time Jesus was speaking to the large crowd following him, and many were excited and wanted to be His disciples. He challenged them with parables.
“For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’” Luke 14:28–30 (ESV)
Jesus was telling them the life of a disciple was going to be a difficult road – and they should think hard about what that meant before following Him. Jesus was looking for disciples who would be fully committed, not someone who walks away with the task unfinished.
A life with Christ is not one you should treat like a brief fad, to be discarded at the next new thing.
